Most folks see a foil-lined tube and assume it’s just for hand lotion or lip balm, but the truth is, cream tubes are far more versatile than that, and getting the right fit between your product and your tube isn’t just about convenience—it’s about shelf life, consistency, and how your customer experiences your product every time they squeeze. cream tube

Let’s start with the basics: why do people use cream tubes anyway? Unlike jars, which are great for thick spreads but often let in air when you dip a finger in (a huge no-no for products that don’t have preservatives), tubes keep air out, are travel-friendly, and dispense just the right amount with one squeeze. But not all creams are made equal, and what works for a rich body butter won’t work for a lightweight toner-in-a-cream hybrid. That’s where a lot of first-time packagers stumble, and where my team and I step in to help.

First up: thick, high-viscosity emollient creams. Think of these as the heavy hitters—body butters, lip balms, healing ointments, and rich night creams that come in at a viscosity of 20,000 cP (centipoise) and higher. We’ve packed thousands of these into our extra-strong aluminum-laminated tubes, because their thick, dense formulas don’t run, leak, or require extra force to dispense. A lot of people ask if a plastic tube will work for these, and the short answer is: maybe, but not for long. Polyethylene (PE) tubes, while cheaper, can stretch or deform when you squeeze out a thick cream repeatedly, especially if the formula has high levels of natural waxes like beeswax or shea butter. We had a customer a few years back who tried to use a standard PE tube for a shea butter body balm, and within a month of stocking it on shelves, the tubes were bulging and some had split at the seams. The issue? The balm’s high wax content added extra rigidity that the thin PE wall couldn’t handle. Switched them to our thick-walled aluminum-laminated tubes, and we haven’t had a return for that product line since. Another example here: pediatric diaper rash ointments, which rely on thick petrolatum and zinc oxide. Pharmaceutical-grade cream tubes need to meet strict safety standards, and our tubes are tested to comply with USP Class VI for these exact products, which is a big reason we’re a go-to for small family-owned pharma brands that can’t afford packaging failures.

Next, lightweight, water-based serums and creams. These are the opposite end of the viscosity spectrum—think hyaluronic acid creams, gel moisturizers, and tinted light face creams that clock in at 1,000 to 5,000 cP. A lot of people assume thin products can work in cheaper plastic tubes, and for the most part, that’s true—but only if the tube has the right nozzle and seal. Water-based formulas are prone to leaking through gaps in the tube’s seal, especially if the formula has solvents that can soften thin plastic over time. We recommend our high-density PE (HDPE) tubes for these, because HDPE is more resistant to the kind of mild acids and solvents in water-based skincare, and their narrow nozzle keeps the lightweight cream from spilling when you toss the tube in a gym bag or a purse. We also recently added a line of flip-top caps for these products, which are a hit with customers who hate unscrewing tight caps for their morning skincare routine. A customer who makes organic hyaluronic acid face cream told us last year that sales went up 18% after we swapped their old jar for our HDPE tubes, because travelers could squeeze a dollop without worrying about it leaking in their carry-ons. That’s the kind of win we live for at our shop—helping a small brand grow just by matching their product to the right tube.

Wait, but what about creams with active ingredients? That’s where things get trickier, because not all tubes can handle ingredients like retinol, vitamin C, or prescription-grade hydroquinone. Retinol, for example, is unstable when exposed to light and air, so the tube needs to be both light-proof and airtight. Our aluminum-laminated tubes have a 99.9% light barrier, which keeps retinol from breaking down when the tube is on a store shelf or in a bathroom cabinet. Vitamin C is another one—it’s acidic, and can react with thin metal or plastic if the tube isn’t lined properly. A lot of suppliers skip the lining for cost, but we use an FDA-approved polyethylene liner inside all our tubes for products with active ingredients, which prevents the acidic vitamin C from eating through the tube wall. We had a customer last year who makes a vitamin C face cream, and he’d been using a cheap unlined tube from another supplier for a year. Half his stock came back with yellow stains on the outside of the tubes—turns out the vitamin C was seeping through the unlined plastic, and some of the cream had oxidized inside, making the product ineffective. Switched to our lined aluminum tubes, and the issue disappeared. For prescription creams, which often have higher concentrations of active ingredients, we also offer tamper-evident seals and child-resistant caps, which are required for products that are regulated by health authorities. That’s another thing a lot of first-time packagers don’t think about: if your product is for the medical or pharma market, your tube has to meet those regulatory checks, and we have the testing and documentation to back that up.

Then there are specialty creams: silicone-based products, hair styling creams, and even topical pain-relieving creams. Silicone is interesting because it’s slippery, and it can sometimes cause a reaction with certain plastics if the tube isn’t compatible. We’ve tested our tubes with all types of silicones, and our silicone-lined tubes work perfectly for hair styling creams and silicone-based face masks, because the lining prevents the silicone from sticking to the tube wall (which would make it hard to squeeze out all the product). For topical pain relievers, which often have menthol or capsaicin, we use tubes that are resistant to those irritants, so the tube doesn’t degrade and the product stays effective. A customer who makes a menthol-based muscle rub told us that their old tubes would start to get sticky around the cap after a few uses, making it hard to close. We switched them to our polypropylene (PP) caps, which are more resistant to menthol, and that problem’s gone entirely.

I should also address the elephant in the room: what creams shouldn’t go in tubes? Because it’s not a one-size-fits-all, and there are some products that are better off in jars or pumps. For example, very runny creams, like a lotion that’s thinner than a 1,000 cP consistency, will leak out of a tube unless it has a very narrow nozzle. Even then, you’re going to waste a lot of product trying to squeeze it out. Our team often tells customers that if their product flows like water, a pump bottle is a better bet, not a tube. Another one: products that need to be exposed to air to work, like some breath-freshening gels or certain topical treatments that oxidize when exposed to oxygen. Tubes seal out air, so those products won’t work as well, and you’ll end up with a product that’s less effective before you even finish the tube. We also don’t recommend tubes for products with very high oil content—like a pure argan oil facial oil that’s 90% oil and only 10% water. The oil can seep through thin plastic tubes over time, leading to leaks and wasted product. For those, we recommend our foil-lined tubes with an extra oil-resistant liner, which we’ve tested to hold up to 100% oil for up to two years.

Here’s the thing I’ve learned over the years: a lot of small brand owners get so focused on their product formula that they treat packaging like an afterthought. But the tube is the first thing your customer interacts with (after the product itself), and if it’s the wrong fit, they’ll notice immediately. I’ve seen a brand with a great organic hand cream fail because they used a cheap PE tube that split on store shelves, and a newer brand with a simple tinted moisturizer blow up because they switched from a jar to our travel-sized HDPE tubes, which were perfect for their target audience. That’s why my team and I take the time to ask customers specific questions: what’s the viscosity of your cream? Does it have active ingredients? Is it for travel or retail? Do you need tamper-evident seals? Those questions help us match them to the right tube, and that’s what makes our work worth it.

If you’re a brand owner, formulator, or someone who’s just starting out with a cream product and wondering what tube is right for you, we can help. We offer custom sizing, different cap options, lined tubes for active ingredients, and even small minimum orders for startups that don’t want to buy thousands of tubes at once. Whether you’re making a family-sized hand cream for your bathroom or a prescription topical cream for a clinic, we have a tube that will work for your product. Don’t waste time or money on packaging that doesn’t fit your cream—reach out to our team today to discuss your needs, and we’ll walk you through the best options for your product. You can count on us to be honest, even if that means telling you a tube isn’t the right fit (we’ve done that for a few customers, and they’ve come back later when their product was ready for tubes). That’s the kind of supplier we are—no pushy sales, just straight talk and quality products.

Baby Cream Tube References:

International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 11607-1:2019, Packaging for Terminally Sterilized Medical Devices – Part 1: Requirements for Materials, Sterilization Barrier Systems and Packaging Systems.

Personal Care Products Council (PCPC) 2022 Guidelines for Cosmetic Packaging Compatibility.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 21 CFR Part 211: Current Good Manufacturing Practice for Finished Pharmaceuticals.

Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association (CTFA) 2021 Report on Viscosity Standards for Topical Cream Packaging.

Smith, L. et al.
